Remember this photo from our French
trip last year? First the agreement is that you can rent the bike for one day for only ONE Euro. However, each usage may only be for less than 30 minutes or they will surcharge you. So if you plan to ride around and look at the sites for three hours you will be charged accordingly in addition to the one Euro. The goal is to have you pick up the bike and go to your destination and then immediately turn the bike in for someone else to use. A few minutes later rent another bike for the SAME one Euro contract. You only pay the one Euro once for the entire day and you have multiple rentals all day. Actually, the bikes are not so much a tourist item as they are means for the local business people and shoppers to get around town. There are bike racks everywhere, so it is easy to find a place to return the bike. When you start you go to the machine (not pictured above - the rental machine is at the end of the row bikes) press the button that shows multiple languages. Pick English and then the computer takes you step by step through the process. When you start, they reserve something like $150 on your credit card in case you steal the bike. At the end of the day they credit back everything except the One Euro rental plus any surcharges for individual usages over 30 minutes. Every time you return the bike to the electric lock on the bike rack, the computer recognizes the bike and a green light goes on to indicate that it knows that you have returned it. Before you rent the bike, check the various bikes in the rack to be sure that the one you want has plenty of air in the tires and that it looks okay. They are very heavy duty bikes, so there is not likely to be any damage. Note the number of the bike stand slot as the rental computer will ask what bike you plan to use. It will then unlock just that one bike in the rack. It is a fun way to get around Paris.
